Chennai to Davos!!! – Fly free!!!

Davos, a small municipality in Switzerland. World knows this place for 2 main reasons 1. World Economic summit, an annual meeting of global political and business elites; and 2. The home of the largest ski resort in Switzerland, serving as the site of the annual Spengler Cup ice hockey tournament. Ironically this place is been referred for both hot business (macro: economics) and cool sporting events.

So, after hearing all these, I have decided to go there to watch “how all those big canons fire”!!! Not only that my country got invitation only after my birth date (What a coincidence! :P). But it is not possible for me to fly. One simple reason is am armature in the concept and I lag sponsorship to fly. But I didn’t give up the idea of following Davos. And one such initiative is this blog entry. I ll watch Davos, and will update you as a part of learning and sharing.

So, our journey starts from Chennai to Davos will start in next few min. Yes, (I struggled a lot to put so many imagination to do this, but take it from me, once we reach there I ll update only facts and happenings!). Though I didn’t receive any invitation from WEF people, I somehow arranged my travel plans to Davos. I had the same feel, what Auro had it in Paa!!!

But why should we have to fly to Davos? The purpose of Davos 2010 is to improve the state of the world that requires catalyzing global cooperation to address pressing challenges and future risks. Global cooperation in turn needs stakeholders from business, government, the media, science, religion, the arts and civil society to collaborate as a true community.

Rethink, Redesign and Rebuild

In response to new priorities, the organizing theme for the 40th World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in 2010 is a call to action, "Improve the State of the World: Rethink, Redesign, Rebuild".

Rethinking the solutions for existing challenges across globe, Redesigning the structures and systems of international cooperation to the challenges of the 21st century, and efforts in Rebuilding trust and confidence among key stakeholders.

Thematic Pillars of the Programme

The programme will focus on the following six areas,

  1. How to Strengthen Economic and Social Welfare
  2. How to Mitigate Global Risks and Address Systemic Failures
  3. How to Ensure Sustainability
  4. How to Enhance Security
  5. How to Create a Values Framework
  6. How to Build Effective Institutions

This is very important to watch Davos because, this WEF covers various important topics such as agriculture and food security, climate change, corporate global citizenship, disaster resource n/w, energy poverty action, financing for development, global competitiveness, global education initiative, global health initiative, global risk n/w, humanitarian relief n/w, national monetary convention project, partnering against corruption, scenario planning, water, working towards wellness, slimcity…

Ooohhhhhhh….am getting headache after reading the titles, I dono how I will cover all these discussions to present to you! Let me try!

As a responsible citizen, I wish to watch and follow this event. What is there for India in this WEF?

India has the potential to emerge as one of the world’s fourth largest economies by 2020, but it will require coordinated efforts by current and future leaders from government, industry and civil society to address pressing challenges.

During closing sessions of WEF 2009, the participants of the India Economic Summit discussed the enablers and challenges for India’s next generation of growth and gave the actions required by industry and government leaders.

Key Points discussed during IES-2009

• India’s security is under control. The country is no more vulnerable to a terrorist attack than any other, according to its government.

• To succeed in generating the growth it needs to sustain progress over the long term, India must address significant potential bottlenecks such as its infrastructure gap and skills deficit.

• To be more effective in turning words into action, India’s leaders must be held accountable for their performance. If they do not deliver, they should be replaced.

• Business to government: Just do it!
